Fatimah Ibrahim, Wan Abu Bakar Wan Abas, Siew-Cheok Ng (2008)

Salat, one of the prescribed obligations for Muslims, has been said to play a central role in maintaining the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health. Although its continuous and unique physical activity have been proposed and accepted as the main contributor to this overall feeling of wellbeing; it has never been properly analysed and documented from the perspectives of science and technology.

This book documents the findings of the salat research conducted at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya. The primary objective of this research is to study the effects and possible therapeutic benefits of salat movements on various physiological aspects, including body composition, cardiovascular system, low back pain, brain signal, and musculoskeletal activity; among others.

Salat: Benefits from Science Perspective is divided into several chapters, discussing various beneficial and therapeutic aspects based on the analysis of empirical data gained from selected physiological parameters. Apart from the obligatory salat, the book also summarises similar physiological findings on other related Muslim obligations, namely fasting in the month of Ramadan and tarawih prayers.
